National Conference Presentation: Cosmetex

At the National Cosmetic Conference, Dr David Ong presented his poster regarding research on selfie photography. As a patient’s selfie is linked to dating and love life (eHarmony, Tinder, Bumble), professional network (Linkedin) and their social networks (Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Tiktok) the increasing importance of the selfie can be appreciated. Patients are now using the selfie to guide their surgical decisions.

In fact, US Facial Plastic Surgeons in 2017 have found that up to 55% of patients are seeking surgery to look more like their selfie. But remember, selfies are far from good standardised surgical photography. Pre- and post operative photography should be standardised, well lit, taken with a professional lens in a reproducible fashion
