Why Patients Consider Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation (mammoplasty) uses implants to change the size, shape, and proportion of the breasts. It is one of the most versatile procedures in cosmetic surgery, addressing a range of personal concerns:

•    Increasing the overall size and fullness of the breasts.

•    Restoring volume and shape lost following pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight fluctuation.

•    Correcting breast asymmetry — a difference in size or shape between the two breasts.

•    Achieving a more balanced proportion between the breasts and the rest of the body.

Breast augmentation can also be combined with a mastopexy (breast lift) for patients who want both increased volume and improved elevation. Dr David Ong will advise at the consultation whether a combined approach may be appropriate for your anatomy and goals.

Implant Options

All implants used by Dr David Ong are Australian TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) approved and carry an approved safety profile when selected and placed appropriately.

During your consultation, Dr David Ong will assess your chest wall dimensions, existing breast tissue, skin quality and desired outcome to recommend the most suitable implant type and profile for your individual anatomy.

Dr David Ong is a principal site investigator for the Australian Breast Implant Device Registry, which records breast implants placed in Australia.

  • Round Implants

    Fuller, more defined upper pole

    •    Symmetrical circular shape that maintains form during movement.

    •    Provides maximum upper pole fullness — preferred by patients wanting a more augmented, lifted appearance.

    •    Available in a range of projection profiles from low to extra-high.

    •    Well suited to patients with good existing breast tissue who want to increase size.

    Anatomical Implants

    Natural teardrop silhouette

    •    Tapered upper portion with a rounder, fuller lower pole — mirroring the natural shape of the breast.

    •    Dynamic behaviour: settles naturally when standing, holds a rounder shape when lying down.

    •    Preferred by patients seeking a subtler, more natural result.

    •    Often recommended for patients with minimal existing breast tissue.

  • Implants are available in smooth and textured surface options. Dr David Ong will discuss current evidence and recommendations with you at your consultation, ensuring implant selection is in line with the latest safety guidance.

Projection profile, the degree to which the implant protrudes forward relative to its base width, ranges from low to ultra-high.

The appropriate profile depends on your chest width, existing tissue and desired outcome. Dr David Ong takes detailed measurements at your consultation to guide this decision.

  • Implants used at Dr David Ong's practice are filled with cohesive silicone gel, which holds together uniformly and retains a natural give that closely resembles breast tissue.

Cohesive gel implants have a well-established safety profile in Australia and internationally.

Implant Placement

Where the implant is positioned relative to the pectoral muscle affects the final shape, feel, and recovery. Dr David Ong discusses placement options in detail at your consultation, taking into account your lifestyle and the type of implant recommended.

  • The implant is placed between the breast tissue and the pectoral muscle. This approach typically involves a shorter recovery and is suitable for patients with good existing tissue coverage. It may produce a more rounded upper pole appearance.

  •  The implant is partially or fully covered by the pectoral muscle. This provides additional soft tissue coverage, which can produce a more natural slope, and is commonly recommended for patients with limited existing breast tissue. Recovery involves some additional discomfort as the muscle stretches.

  • A combination approach in which the upper portion of the implant is covered by the muscle while the lower portion sits behind the breast tissue. This is a versatile option that suits a wide range of patients and implant types.

Am I a suitable candidate?

A personal consultation with Dr David Ong is the only way to determine your individual suitability for breast augmentation. The following is a general guide to candidacy:

  • ✓  You are 18 years of age or older.

✓  You are in good general health with no uncontrolled medical conditions.

✓  You are a non-smoker, or are willing to stop smoking and vaping for at least 8 weeks before surgery and 8 weeks after.

✓  You have realistic expectations of outcomes and understand results vary between individuals.

✓  You are able to take sufficient time off work and away from strenuous activity during your recovery.

✓  You understand that breast implants are not lifetime devices and may require future revision surgery.

You understand there are risks involved and that outcomes cannot be guaranteed.

If you have a personal or family history of breast cancer, autoimmune conditions, bleeding disorders, or other relevant medical history, please disclose this at your consultation.

These factors do not necessarily preclude surgery, but will inform how Dr David Ong advises you.
